Pop rockers 51st Avenue talk about newest single!

Band picture by @weightlessinthevalley Hello 51st Avenue, thanks for your time. Would you mind introducing your band to our readers? Of course! We would love to. We are a Sydney-based 4-piece band that set out to create a sonically pleasing and diverse sound blending the key features of Electronic, Pop and Rock music. We enjoy pushing the boundaries and fusing the heavier aspects of rock with the elements of electronic and pop music. Examples of things you may find within our songs are distorted guitars, trap beats, synths and catchy melodies. How would you describe the pop rock scene, in Sydney, Australia? Any local bands you guys are currently listening to or we should keep an eye on? The pop rock scene is going strong. There are some really great bands out there at the moment, some of which we have been lucky to share the stage and become friends with. Between us we have been loving Redhook, Start Your Own Cult, Closure, A Swift Farewell and Everleigh. These are just some of the bands we have been listening to recently but there are so many more the list could go on and on! You're releasing, today, your new single, ‘Don’t Want Me’. What's the story behind this song and where did you find your overall inspiration? Yes! We are very excited to release this song. ‘Don’t Want Me’ comes from a place of realization that you aren’t as special or important as someone has led you to believe. It’s the anthem to confront that someone as it puts them in their place and provides some closure and clarity that you are above their lies and deceit. The inspiration came from a personal experience as most of our songs do. I had invested a lot of time and effort into someone who I thought we shared a strong connection. With no warning this person had disappeared from my life, I believe the term is ‘’ghosted’ haha. This song was written as an open letter, letting the person know that they should take responsibility for their actions. This song is released alongside a music video. How was the shooting experience? The shooting experience was amazing. We worked with Colin Jeffs (Ten Of Swords Media Collective) and he was an absolute pleasure to work with. It was our first time shooting with him and from the start of the day it was nothing but good vibes and laughs. He made the shooting experience enjoyable, comfortable and productive. We were beyond happy with the final product and he is truly great at what he does. After it was done, we jokingly said we wish we could film a video once a week because it was so much fun. In general, is there a merch item that you attach particular importance to? If yes, which one? For each of us it’s different, but there’s two items that we collectively agree as being important or a staple in any band’s merch catalogue. A good T-shirt and a hoodie to us is like a rite of passage for local bands. I’m sure you are, like a lot of people, missing live shows. Do you already have some dates planned for 2021 / 2022? Yes, we definitely are missing live shows. However, there has been a good spike of live shows within the last couple months which is promising. We have already played two shows recently and we do not have anything set in stone but have some big plans for the rest of this year. We will be holding a single release show to celebrate ‘Don’t Want Me’ in the near future. To finish, what is one lesson you’ve learned that you think is important to pass onto other bands? Remember to keep it fun! It’s about creating and playing music with friends, we all want to ‘make it’ in some sense of the word. Set yourselves achievable goals and ensure that you meet them. One of the best pieces of advice we’ve ever received is ‘don’t quit your day job’ (Bill Kelliher - 2018). Thanks for your time!
