In this new written interview, French rockers El Coyoté are discussing the release of their debut self-titled EP. Learn more about this release below!
Hey El Coyoté! For those who might discover your band via this interview, would you mind introducing yourselves?
So, El Coyoté is an energetic indie rock band with French lyrics. We live near Paris and have been playing together for 2 years now. The band is made up of 4 members: Yannick on drums, David on bass, Cédric on guitar + keyboard and Alexandre on vocals and rhythm guitar.
You’re based in Rambouillet, France. What are your thoughts on the underground music scene here?
Unfortunately, the underground scene in the area is pretty poor. There are very few opportunities to play, and good venues are rare. Getting on stage is a real headache, and a lot of bands get discouraged because of this. It's a shame, though, because there are some talented bands in the area right now, in a variety of styles, who deserve our attention (La Vie sur Mars, Les Mineurs, Ren Gamma, Dirty species...). It's great for everyone because it creates interaction and emulation between us.
You revealed on July 14th 2023 your debut self-titled EP. How did your band approach the songwriting and recording process for this EP?
For the recording, we were lucky enough to meet Aurélien INESTA, who has his own studio at home, just a few kilometers from where we both live. The feeling was quickly established. A lot of respect, listening and advice on his part, which quickly put us at ease. We felt right at home.
As for the writing process, it's very varied: it can start with a simple jam in rehearsal or a song written in its entirety by one member of the band, which the 4 of us then take the time to arrange. Everyone participates. Nothing is set in stone, and that's what's so great, so powerful and even so disconcerting about the creative process: you never quite know where you're going to end up.
Can you dig into the themes and inspirations behind the songs on the EP?
The main, recurring theme of the lyrics is quite simply life and the human relationships that flow from it... This life that can bring you magical, incredible moments, but also moments of doubt, sadness, betrayal...
How do you envision this EP contributing to the ongoing evolution of your band and your impact on the music scene?
For the band, the release of this EP is a very powerful and eagerly awaited moment, as it's our first. It's the fruit of many months' work and research. It's a superb calling card. It will enable us to canvass venues, bars and the media for dates. That's our number 1 objective over the next few months: to defend this EP on stage. At the same time, we're already working on new tracks, because we're also thinking about what's next.
You’ll play a few shows in September. What is the thing you like the most about playing in front of people?
Getting up on stage and playing in front of an audience (no matter how big or small) is always a unique moment. It's an indescribable collective thrill, and the emotions are multiplied by 100, by 1000. You never know what's going to happen. At first, you think you've got it all under control, that you've got it all planned out, but you never do. I'd say it's a bit like jumping into a void.
The last words are for you. If you have any other projects in the making or a message to convey, here's your chance!
First of all, we'd like to thank you for your trust and interest in our project. It's been great. Secondly, we don't have any particular message other than to encourage every creative person in the world to come out of their lair, to dare to take the 1st step, not to be afraid of being judged and to go for it. Today, the world needs artists more than politicians!
