Ontario pop punks Among Legends have revealed a cover of the Spice Girls’ 1996 song ‘Wannabe’.
“It’s the 25th anniversary of Wannabe this month, and we’ve included it in our sets for a number of years,” said lead vocalist Mitchell Buchanan. “We love playing it - the music is awesome, there’s lots of room for harmonies, and most people in the room already know it, so it’s a good way to ensure we’re giving them a fun show.”
The music video for Wannabe is a blend of clips from the band members, as well as content submitted by fans, friends and family of the band. Each band member filmed on their own due to COVID restrictions in Ontario, and much of the music video references common challenges during the pandemic.
“We wanted to poke fun at some of the things many of us have experienced over the past 18 months,” said Buchanan. “Struggles to stay motivated, concerns about going out, finding ways to relax when your home is also your workspace. We filmed vignettes of situations I think many people will recognize, and this is our lighthearted way of reminding folks that we’ve always all been in this together. Among Legends has always been a band that tries to look on the bright side. This song, our own clips, the joy in the videos that other people sent us - this is our way of overcoming a challenging year and a half.”
